Edgar meets Elvis

Possibly the most awkward coffee date ever.

Done for my advertising concepts class. Another piece for the fictional coffee house/bookstore; this time the idea was to pair up two diverse authors/musicians/artists/what have you. There was some alliteration going on in the examples he gave us ("Where Pacino meets Picasso!"), so I went with the good misters Poe and Presley. The other ideas I had in mind were Marilyn Monroe and Karl Marx, Lewis Carrol and Bruce Campbell, and Alfred Lord Tennyson and George Takei, but I'm in Poe Mode lately (he's at the center of my thesis project; more on that later) so I went with him. Plus I just love drawing his spindly victorian weirdness.

I think my favorite part of this whole thing is the way Poe is stirring his tea. Plus: I drew guys! I never draw guys. All things considered, I think they look okay.

spitball #2

The second - and more successful, in my opinion - illustration for the baseball magazine assignment. The story accompanying the illustration is about a reallly obnoxious, overbearing father.

spitball #1

One of my assignments in Illustration Studio this semester was two small b&w illustrations for a baseball magazine. This is one of 'em. The poem that went along with it described right field as being the remotest corner of the universe, so... yeah.

I'm really not a sports person.

character design: greek/modern fusion, part 3

And finally, it's Antigone, Oedipus' daughter. Here she is, 50's-style.

And 60's-style, getting her go-go on.

character design: greek/modern fusion, part 2

This time we have 50's Polynices, Oedipus' hapless son who would totally hang out with Richie Cunningham.

And rocking the Maynard G. Krebbs look, it's 60's-style Polynices.

character design: greek/modern fusion, part 1

We got a bit of a strange assignment in Concept Art a few weeks ago. We were given a list of characters from Oedipus and told to fuse them with the style of the 50s or 60s. So basically Gladiator meets Pleasantville or Austin Powers. We each chose three characters and did two versions of each. I chose to do one version from each decade.
One of the characters I chose was Jocosta, Oedipus' real mother/wife. This is 50's Iocosta.
And here we have 60's Jocosta, rocking the Jackie O/flight attendent look. She looks a little dead around the eyes, but I think it's just the whole incest thing taking its toll.
